What Does Hypnosis Feel Like?

Many people wonder what it feels like to go under a trance while in hypnosis. The truth is, it varies from individual to individual and may be different each time. However, what everyone can agree on is feeling a deep sense of relaxation and ease.
After clients have their first session with me, I am often told that our hypnosis session was the most relaxed they have ever felt in their life. And that’s exactly what going into a deep trance can feel like - relaxation. In our sessions, we first start off by relaxing the body, then the mind through different types of ‘hypnotic inductions’ and ‘deepeners,’ often times including suggestions for the client to relax and go even deeper into that relaxation.
Relaxation may feel profound or subtle. By relaxing the body, clients report muscles loosening and relaxing. Others report their minds becoming at ease and not filled with the many thoughts or stressors they had before.
One key part to hypnosis is the client’s intention to focus. When they focus on relaxation and follow the hypnotherapist’s voice and instructions, they will undoubtedly arrive at a state of relaxation. When they follow suggestions, the state of hypnosis usually deepens. This is due, in part, to a ‘rule of the mind‘, that each suggestion acted upon allows for greater acceptance of following suggestions.
There is nothing that can prevent a person from going into a trance, since it is a natural state we enter multiple times a day and because all hypnosis is self-hypnosis. If the person's intention is set to relax and focus on their goal, it will be achieved.
In a trance, it can often feel like many things. I will name a few to paint a picture in your head. Clients will always remain conscious, coherent and control, but being in a trance is a lot like daydreaming. Each person, and each time, can be different. The body can feel heavy or light, sinking or floating, tingling or warm. The body might feel expansive, more than just their physical body. Or they might only be able to focus on one spot on their forehead. The mind could feel calm and clear, concentrated and focused, daydreamy and drifty, peaceful or confident. You may drift away from the words, but drift into the spirit of the communication. You can remain in hypnosis whether your eyes are open or closed, whether you are speaking or silent, whether you are still or moving. It’s an easy space to safely process emotions.
As mentioned above, hypnosis is a state of focused awareness, it is not unconsciousness. You are in control during the entire process. The conscious mind is still there, making sure you are safe. That being said, people in hypnosis can still be aware of their external surroundings, but they are more tuned in to their internal processes. It’s very similar to watching a movie, and having that straight forward focus where all your focus goes into is that movie.
Some people may come out of hypnosis feeling like they had fallen asleep. Usually, this isn’t the case, but instead they will enter a very deeply relaxed state, that it felt as if they were sleeping. Others remember, while others may have more difficulty remembering - this could differ each session as well, mostly depending on the depth of trance they go into.
It really is a wonderful experience to go into a trance, one that will be different for everyone. Many people report a wonderful sense of peace and groundedness following sessions, as well as getting a restorative full night’s sleep.
